Ghaggar River

How this campaign started

Since my childhood, I have learnt that rivers are our mothers, so when I visited River Ghaggar bank to walk around it, I noticed that the bank and the river were getting polluted at a fast pace. Daily heaps and heaps of garbage in the form of plastic, polythene, red dupattas, cartons, building and construction waste, mattresses etc have been pilling on the bank.

This was not at all what I had expected a river bank to be like. No body seems to care or do anything about River Ghaggar. For many years, I, alone tried creating awareness among people who were throwing garbage in the river but most of them did not pay any heed. It was not only garbGe around the bank but also early morning, there used to females and an hour later men from nearby slum areas, who would come to the bank with their children to defecate.

I did not appreciate when people halted their vehicles on Ghaggar Bridge and threw in many things in big packets and polythenes. Apart from causing traffic jams, just throwing any thing in the River Ghaggar was an unpleasant site.

I would pick up litter all alone, but for the lack of dustbins on the banks, could not do much for getting the bank clean. Then, I started talking to other social activists and one day met Mohit Gupta ji. He had already done many social welfare tasks. He immediately said we should form a team and start working on Saving River Ghaggar. He called Ajay Joshi ji. This was the start of Save River Ghaggar campaign in April 2021.

We started discussing about ways to get the banks cleaned and create awareness among citizens of tri city. We came up with different plans and Ajay ji made a team of volunteers with Arjun Kumar and his friends, who till date are cleaning River Ghaggar on daily basis, except for in rainy season.

As I am a trainer, I keep on interacting with children of all age groups and inspiring their parents as well to Save River Ghaggar. Many children are now a part of our campaign. In June 2023, many children wrote post cards to our Honourable Chief Minister to help us Save River Ghaggar. This way our team of Ghaggar saviours is getting more and more support from the residents of tri city and we work every day to Save our very dear River Ghaggar.

Every month we plan various events, like cleaning drives( not in rainy season), creating awareness drives, human chain on Ghaggar Bridge etc. All the residents are welcome are requested to connect with us through email or social media handles to become a River Ghaggar Saviour.

I’m Mohit Gupta, a co-founder of the Save River Ghaggar Campaign. Our mission is to revive the dying River Ghaggar in the Chandigarh Tricity region. It’s facing neglect, reduced flow, pollution, and is on the brink of extinction. We believe in urgent action through stricter regulations, reforestation, and public awareness. Let’s work together to restore this vital ecosystem for a sustainable future.

Mr. Mohit Gupta

I am Mohit Gupta, a co-founder at the save river ghaggar campaign.

Once teeming with life the River ghaggar the sole river in the Chandigarh tricity region
has been going through years of neglect and decay via reduced water flow, chemical , sewage and plastic pollution and is now reduced to a seasonal rivulet on the verge of going extinct.

When Tapasya Sharma came to with her idea of trying to clean and rejuvenate the dying river ghaggar I immediately agreed to the idea as I was always of the opinion that a river is not just a mere water body but the lifeline of the area , it’s ecosystem and supports it’s bio diversity apart from fulfilling the water needs of the area.

Rejuvenating river ghaggar is an urgent call to action. Governments, communities, and individuals must work together towards sustainable solutions.

We need to implement stricter regulations for industrial and domestic waste disposal, invest in wastewater treatment facilities, and promote eco-friendly practices.

At the save river ghaggar organize river cleanup campaigns, engage in reforestation efforts near riverbanks, and educate the younger generation about the importance of river conservation. Public awareness and participation are key to fostering a sense of responsibility and ownership for these natural treasures.

Individually, we can make a difference too. By reducing plastic waste, and adopting eco-friendly lifestyles, we can alleviate some of the pressure on our rivers.

In conclusion, river rejuvenation is not a choice – it is an imperative. The health and well-being of our society and the planet depend on clean, thriving rivers. Let us come together, act with urgency, and restore these precious waterways to their former glory. Together, we can make a lasting impact and create a sustainable future for generations to come

Thanks and Regards
